The Mutual Support Group is a nonprofit civil society organization created in 1984 that brings together the relatives of people illegally detained and forcibly disappeared in Guatemala during the Internal Armed Conflict that lasted from 1960 to 1996.
They seek justice for missing persons during the Internal Armed Conflict in Guatemala. Their efforts focus on strategic litigation for cases of forced disappearance, promotion of exhumations in clandestine cemeteries and subsequent exhumations. In addition, the search for missing children and the reception of complaints of human rights violations for current cases.
They work in transparency and fight against corruption in Guatemala. They produce reports on the human rights situation in Guatemala, thematic reports on security and budget execution, requests for access to public information, training on access to information and social auditing.
Their dignification work centers itself around the victims of the armed conflict. Their activities are carried out in the field of transitional justice including the processes of burials and exhumations.
The GAM historical archive is an effort to rescue millions of documents which contain testimonies from the victims of humans rights violations during the Guatemalan Internal Armed Conflict. The archive looks to give virtual access to a collection of documents which narrate the events lived by the victims during this period. The objective is to permit that the histories of the events are known from the testimonies of the families and that they contribute to the dignity and memory of the loved ones.
